Grades 4 & 5 are both building rovers, which makes the mechanics, the math and the science the same at this stage. We have divided into 3 groups; Tires, Chasis and Transmission.
The groups are aware they need to test variations of builds. There is no reward for being the right designer, like my square wheels — to know what is correct we have to eliminate what is wrong.
The cardboard is flying this week, but by next week testing begins. There are designed tests for each component. The process of combining best of each idea in each group brings together ONE build from each group in which there is no real single designer.
After this post, my 4th and 5th grade posts will be separate. The kids are asking for some supplies to move on to their next version prototypes. I have created a request box for those. I will circulate what they want, but we are still at the prototype test, rebuild in cardboard for this week.
I think every design shows something so unique, it is hard not to get caught up in their ideas.
Remind the students they must bring their own; tape, scissors, pen/pencil to class. I have metric rulers. Eventually if I do my job right, they are going to want math compasses. I have none.
